An uprising that occurred in 1911 to the Qing Dynasty that ended the dynasty, making China become republic during the year 1912; the Boxer Rebellion had weakened the dynasty. The Boxer Protocol of September 1901 protecting Beijing and all officials of both Chinese government and Boxer were to be charged with the uprising. The boxer rebellion ended those terms. In 1900 a Chinese secret organization known as the Society of the Righteous and Harmonious Fists created a revolution toward the spread of Japanese and Western authority in northern china. Rebels were known to westerners as boxers; the boxers practiced special exercises physically to take bullets and killed Chinese Christians and ruined property. If Archduke Francis Ferdinand who was the heir to the throne of Austria –Hungary, had not been assassinated; his plan to transform and create a federation for all Austrian Slavs would have been implemented. Nationalist Slavs had yearned for unity among all Slavs to be free; this movement pledged a strong sense of nationalism for the race of Slavic nationality. Pan-Slavism is a principle and movement to unite all Slavs and all Slavic people to one nation and be addressed as an independent nation. During 1879 Germany and Austria promised one another a neutral stance to each other; this alliance was anti-Russian. Later in 1882 it became a triple alliance to become anti-French, when Italy joined Germany and Austria’s original alliance. â€Å"The History Boys† is about eight boys of high academic abilities who are preparing to sit the Oxbridge entry exam. They are taught by two homosexual teachers, Hector and Irwin, who have total different teaching strategies. Hector is an older man with strong feelings towards poetry and has no particular teaching program and gropes his students and it seems that the boys don’t really enjoy it though at the end it shows that they are quite ok with that. He is the new teacher that has been taken in to teach the students about how to stand out between their competitors with getting into Oxford. There is quite some competition between both the teachers with Hector being older and Irwin being more attractive and being very close in age with the boys. â€Å"He does, depressingly so† Hector seems very jealous and depressed at the fact that the new teacher Irwin is clever. This means that there is even more competition for Hector and that if he wants to impress the boys, he needs to work harder. Irwin is obviously younger and even more attractive than Hector which could make things even more complicated for Hector. Hector is clearly gay and gropes his students, but what the students do not know is that Irwin too is gay. Hector obviously has realised that the students don’t really mind him groping them as they are not objecting in any way. He could be scared that Irwin would do the same as he does and therefore because of his attractiveness the boys would like Irwin more than they like Hector. The fact that their teaching strategies are so different makes it even more interesting to compare the two together. At one point in the story, both teachers teach the boys at the same time. â€Å"We don’t know who we are, sir. Your class or Mr. Irwin’s.† At Irwin’s lessons, the boys are more serious, as Irwin has a programme. At Hector’s lessons they are more thoughtful and they decide how to start the lessons. So when both teachers are teaching at the same time it gets a little difficult and they boys don’t really know how to behave. Mrs. Lintott is not very surprised at the fact that Irwin is intelligent. Originally published for adults, the novel has become a common part of high school and college curricula throughout the English-speaking world†7 It’s quite strange that the book was originally published for adults and now is used widely in schools and colleges. â€Å"Let each child that’s in your care have as much neurosis as the child can bear.† This is a section from Auden’s poem Letter to Lord Byron. He could be meaning that it’s no harm if you bring up your children in a hard way as it will be good as long as it does not go too far. So really, the books that are not liked by the children and yet are forced upon them won’t harm them and it will be useful to them one day. In the next section of the play, Irwin and the boys are talking about the Second World War and the reasons for why it really happened. Irwin starts off and lets the boys come to a conclusion. â€Å"Which, sir, since Wilfred Owen says men were dying like cattle, is the appropriate word.† Hector finds it important that they know poems by heart as it will be understood by them one day, and that is what really happens here. They use their knowledge that’s given over by Hector not just in English but in their other lessons meaning that learning these poems by heart really is useful. The poem describes how so many men were dying during the war that they looked like masses of animal. â€Å"First Class†¦I am asleep.† The fact that he is asleep is because he has read exactly the same story for 8 times and he had rather read something what would be outside people’s comfort zone. Especially when that essay can guarantee you a place in on of the top universities you need to think for yourself and try to stand out within the crowd, your competitors. â€Å"What has that got to do with anything?† Writing an essay on history should not per se be about the truth. History is truth as far as the writers are concerned and is usually written by those that were victorious (in a war for example). History is history for those who want to believe it is history from the victorious perspectives. If you read it from the perspective of the conquered you will hear another story and the other would be blamed. â€Å"We still don’t like to admit the war was even partly our fault because so many of our people died. According to Irwin, the Second world lead to many people dying which is why people are sensitive about it but what they do not know is that there were people that actually enjoyed the war. According to him, and he is referring the poets, â€Å"most of them seem to have enjoyed the war.†13 Because of the war the poets had something to write about, that’s where they got their inspiration from. If there was no war, they would not have been able to write such powerful poems without a lot of difficulty. When you have experienced something yourself it is much easier to write about it. Poems are the words of the poet and you can interpret it in any way you like yet you cannot exactly know what the poet meant with his words. â€Å"In other words†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Again, this is something they have learned in Hector’s lessons. Irwin thinks the lessons of Hector are more fun than educational but this clearly says that they do learn things in his lesson. At schools teachers spoon-feed their students all the way through. When Rudge asks Irwin; â€Å"What do I write down?†15 Irwin responds with; â€Å"I must not write down every word that teacher says.†16 Irwin clearly wants them to think for themselves. He’s happy to help them along and tell them what direction they need to go to, but at the end of the day, it has to be them that think it through and they should come to an own conclusion on their own. A second conflict is implemented into the play just after Irwin and Hectors first dispute, when this happens you can start to understand why Alan Bennett added a mock interview scene; to purposely cause confliction at a significant stage between these three teachers, the power struggle continues by the quote â€Å"Hector: No, you should just say what you enjoy. Posner: Mozart. Irwin: No, no. Everyone likes Mozart. Somebody more off the beaten track, Tippett, say, or Buckner† this quote holds a lot through its language, for instant, Hector is relaxed with his speech, as commas are placed in areas such as â€Å"No, you should just say† which means he is in no rush to push his views to the boys while Irwin is the complete opposite â€Å"Somebody more off the beaten track, Tippett, say, or Buckner† with the use of commas, it points out that Irwin is more desperate to get his points across in the situation, a metaphor is used here with the quote â€Å"Off the eaten track†. You sympathise more with Hector with this quote, because he is trying to teach his students the core of education and what it is worth to make them unique, while Irwin is smothering the boys with things that he knows the examiners would like to hear. You see where Irwin and Hector are coming from more clearly with this quote after there second dispute â€Å"Hector: May I make a suggestion? Why can they not all just tell the truth? Irwin: It’s worth trying, provided, of course, you can make it seem like you’re telling the truth? this quote emits one of Alan Bennett’s style of writing, when Hector says â€Å"May I make a suggestion? † this blatantly shows that a rhetorical question has been implemented, as Hector continues without Irwin’s permission, Alan Bennett is known commonly to use this in his past work such as ‘Talking Heads’. Irwin continues with the short spaced commas as well, remaining impatient and slightly worried, as the job that the Headmaster as promised him means a lot to his career, so in a sense, he is desperate. The next key moment is Mrs. Lintott’s speech on sexism, her reasons why are because Woman’s status’ were still not balanced between men’s in the early 1980’s which caused a problem in society. Alan Bennett uses another common style that he writes in, which is irony, this is placed into the fact that Mrs. Lintott is the only woman and also has the smallest role that appears in the play, and her largest speech is coincidently her talking about sexism â€Å"Mrs. Lintott: I’ll tell you why there are no woman historians on TV, it’s because they don’t get carried away for a start, and they don’t come bouncing up to you with every new historical notion they’ve come up with† the speech is her general views of stereotypical men in the early 1980’s but modified around the subject of history as stereotypical men in this era is made to look arrogant and boastful. ‘Downtrodden and Misfortunate’ is one typical theme the Alan Bennett associates within his characters, with Mrs.  Lintott and how she is put down because she is a woman; this also brings up the theme of ‘The Role of Women’, and Hector who is being forced out of the school where he teaches because of his sexuality which arises the theme or ‘Homosexuality’. There a symbolism that Mrs. Lintott does not fit into the conflict of Hector and Irwin well, mainly because she is a woman and that her views are about equality where Hectors and Irwin’s are merely opposites. This symbolises in a way that she is the diffuser between Hector and Irwin â€Å"Mrs. Lintott: On a strictly non-gender-orientated basis, I just wonder whether it occurs to any of you how dispiriting it is. † This quote supports this. The play, as a whole uses very little stage direction, this is accounted for as a style. His reasons for this in his own words were â€Å"I have not included many stage directions or even noted changes of scene; the more fluid the action the better† (Which was found in the book), this in a sense can be referred to it being written as a novel; this and the subject of sex, has been found to be used by Bennett in numerous books (Talking heads, The Lady In The Van). There can be negatives to little stage direction that Alan Bennett uses, where the direction of the play could be interpreted very differently that how Bennett would’ve liked. There’s reason Hector and Irwin conflict in this play, Alan Bennett focus’ on opposites with teaching devices, but goes more in-depth with this by using symbolisms, the characters may conflict, but Alan Bennett implies this in more than one way for them being opposites, for example; Hector is a larger character; the film in 2006 suggests this, and Irwin is thinner. Hector is older; Irwin is younger which you find out through the plays storyline. Hectors language is more florid and worth â€Å"Oh, yes, a degree of presentation† while Irwin’s is more basic â€Å"Otherwise they are likely to be the usual, ‘What are your hobbies? ’ type questions†. Hector holds a traditional view while Irwin is more in the modern era. Hector understands the core value of education while Irwin preferably interested in marks and pleasing the headmaster. All these opposites show that they are naturally meant to conflict each other, thus polarizing arguments that are highlighted by Alan Bennett. In conclusion these four pages Alan Bennett use’s themes from ‘Homosexuality’ to ‘The role of women’ along with the styles of minimal use of stage direction, this is seen in the play as a whole because the play revolves around these issues from the beginning to the end of the play, this is seen with Posner falling for Dakin, Hector eventually being blackmailed into retirement and no conclusion or mention found to Mrs.  Lintott’s issue of sexism. Alan Bennett claimed â€Å"Too much stage direction prevents the actions and events of the play flow† evidence of little stage description between scenes, allowing a director to interpret the play with much freedom. The novel â€Å"In the Heat of the Night† introduces the reader to two characters, Virgil Tibbs and Bill Gillespie. Virgil Tibbs is a homicide detective at the Pasadena Police department, and Bill Gillespie is the Chief of Police for Wells County. In the novel they are shown as two completely opposite characters whose personalities differ almost completely. The basic aspect of the novel is how during the 1960’s people in the south underwent severe racism and prejudice. The novel also depicts how because of those racial tensions the way these two characters interact with each other and how that is evident. In the beginning of the novel we are introduced to Virgil Tibbs. He is shown as a wealthy, highly educated, and confident young African American. Virgil Tibbs is introduced to us as a prime suspect for the murder of Enrico Mantoli. Soon after we are presented that Tibbs is an officer and that is a shock to Gillespie. Every time that Gillespie would arrest some one Virgil proved them innocent, when Borers was arrested Virgil proved Gillespie wrong by proving to him that Borers was not the murderer. When Gillespie arrested Sam Wood Virgil also roved him innocent. Even though Gillespie dint like to be proven wrong by anyone (none less a Negro) he respected Virgil for his great detective work. At one point in the novel Gillespie and Tibias shake hands and I think that was the high point of this mutual respect. Virgil respect Gillespie that much in the beginning and most of the middle of this story but In the end Virgil respected Gillespie. I think it was good that Virgil did not respect Gillespie because Gillespie was using Virgil for his scapegoat.At the end of this story Gillespie finally showed everyone that he respected Tibias by telling every one the truth about the murder investigation, and giving most of the credit to Virgil. Gillespie also showed respect to Virgil by not lying to everyone and saying that he solved the murder. Another sign of the respect Gillespie had for Virgil Is the letter he sent to chief saying that he did an excellent Job. At the end of the story Virgil and Gillespie had a great deal of respect for each other and this Is a respect that I think would last for many years to come.

How is the Struggle between Good and Evil presented in Lord of the Flies? Essay

Lord of the Flies was written by Word War II veteran William Golding and follows the lives of a group of school boys who crash land on a tropical island after an atomic bomb goes off. The novel starts like an adventure story of a group of boys free to do what they want in paradise with the lack of adult control. However the story quickly develops into a deeply meaningful insight into the evil of human nature and a tale of the desperate struggle for the survival of good. The author concentrates on the decent from democracy to chaos. He presents the tale as the struggle between good and evil through a variety of methods from physical struggles, like the fights between Jack and Ralph, to subtle battles for control, like Jacks constant power mongering and undermining of Ralph. Golding uses a small group of main characters to tell the majority of the story. First there is Ralph, â€Å"the boy with fair hair,† he is the first character the reader is introduced to and is instantly likeable as he is naturally attractive and has a lot of charisma. The other boys naturally respect him because of these attributes and he makes a good leader because of this. The story revolves around Ralph and his emotions. Ralph is tempted by Jack and evil ways but is undoubtedly good and the hero. Then there is Piggy, â€Å"shorter†¦and very fat,† the second to be introduced. Piggy is the opposite of Ralph in terms of looks and is an easy target for bullying. Piggy is like Ralph, good, but unlike Ralph is never tempted by evil. Then there is Jack, the leader of the choir who become the hunters. Jack rules by fear alone and does not like to share power. â€Å"†I ought to be chief,† said Jack with a simple arrogance.† So he is deeply resentful of Ralph being chosen diplomatically as leader. Besides being a leader he is a bully, â€Å"shut up fatty†, Jack targets piggy the most while he starts off gaining Ralph’s trust and broods secretly over his humiliation of democratic defeat. Jack is the main source of evil on the island and drives the island into savagery with his obsession with hunting and power gr abbing. Ralph represents good’s struggle with evil through his actions. To start with he is tempted by Jack and hunting, â€Å"Ralph watched them [the hunters] envious and resentful.† And this is reflected in the way he treats Piggy; at the beginning he mocks him and does not take him seriously, â€Å"†Piggy!† Ralph shrieked with laughter,† by the end he is to Ralph â€Å"the true, wise friend called Piggy.† Golding has shown a drifting scale through the book at the beginning Ralph and Jack are great friends, by the end they are mortal enemies. As Jack becomes less civilised Ralph likes him less and as Ralph becomes more civilised he likes Piggy more. Ralph represents the failing battle of good against evil. Even though ultimately he was rescued, he failed to stop evil and maintain order, peace or even the fire. Jack represents evil in the book and is typically compared with Hitler and other evil dictators in history. The simplicity of Jack is the terrifying part about him. He acts on his feelings and rules everyone by fear and dictating to everyone one. He is arrogant, determined, quite clever, bossy and a bully. At the start he is clearly a bad person and there are dark hints of his evil, â€Å"light blue eyes, frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn to anger.† However he is still just a typical bully, nothing special, just in a special situation. Jack controls the â€Å"hunters† who start as the choir but descend into savagery following Jack. It is who Jack is at the beginning of the story compared to who he becomes that shows how evil dominates the island. Jack like many others is primarily concerned with meat, hunting, games and having fun no matter who they hurt. This makes him appealing and as Ralph constantly tries to enforce the rules Jack uses this to undermine Ralph and strengthen his own position. For example Jack criticises Ralph for â€Å"not hunting† and being â€Å"bossy†. Golding also uses symbolism to present the struggle between good and evil. Firstly there is the Conch. This object is used by Ralph to call meetings and to keep order in a gathering by making a rule that only the holder of the Conch may speak. The Conch represents democracy and begins as a beautiful colourful object, â€Å"a deep cream, touched here and there with faded pink.† But as savagery creeps into the island it gets duller and darker until Roger smashes it into â€Å"a thousand white fragments†. This shows how as evil creeps into the island democracy and rules become less and less relevant until they are destroyed completely by evil, embodied in this case by Roger. The fire represents man’s inability to control nature. The fire is used to cook meat and to try and signal for a rescue. However as savagery increases the fire is not used as a signal, it is used only for cooking meat. This shows how some of the boys give up on civilisation and loose hope of it coming back. In the end the hunters try to use the fire to kill Ralph. Ironically this act of pure destruction and chaos leads to the resurrection of society on the island through the arrival of the rescue boat. Simon and Roger represent two ends of a scale in the book. Golding has used Roger as a representation of true evil while using Simon as a Jesus like pure good character. Both are loners with few friends and stay outside the group but when it is involved in good things, like building huts, Simon joins in. As the island descends into savagery Roger not only joins in but also becomes as powerful as Jack â€Å"wielding a nameless authority.† Of course as Simon is the representation of good he is destroyed by evil. Roger as the representation of evil not only helps to destroy Simon, but also murders Piggy. These two characters also help to define the decent into savagery. At the beginning when Ralph has just been elected leader, Simon goes with the Jack and Ralph exploring the island. He is at his most popular at this point and this shows how at the beginning good people like Simon are very expectable. Before the end Simon is murdered and by the time Ralph is hunted Roger is nearly as powerful as Jack. â€Å"Roger edged past the Chief, only just avoiding pushing him with his shoulder.† This shows how powerful Roger has become, because while you would think all of Jack’s followers fear or at the least respect him Roger clearly has little of either for Jack as he nearly knocks him over while passing by. This shows how evil has began to dominate the group and makes it seem like Jake is no longer evil enough to control the group. This shows that evil is it’s own master and Roger would probably go on to take over the group, as he is so evil and therefore powerful. Golding experiences of WWII are linked to the entire book. In WWII Golding would have seen un-imaginable evil, men fighting men to the death merciless and horrible to watch. The ideas portrayed in the book offer explanations to why evil dominates good. Firstly it is easier to be evil and a lot more fun. The novel shows this by hunting and other games. During a hunt a boy must cause pain to an animal and ultimately kill it, but that is not considered as the pleasure is a drug to the young boys’ minds which none can deny. The same goes for games involving others being hurt, they know that they are causing pain but slowly they begin to care less and less. They cause more and more pain to the human they are hunting letting the excitement overwhelm them, until an event like the death of Simon happens and boundaries have been crossed. By then there is no turning back and the once innocent boy playing games are lost in savagery and they have become easy to control with fear and hunti ng. That is how Jack gained his power. Secondly being good all the time is near impossible and boring. Even Ralph joins the hunt and is in fact the first to make fun of Piggy. In fact Ralph is the first to call Piggy Piggy, â€Å"his real name’s Piggy.† And begin the cycle of bullying that leads to his death. What Golding shows by this is nobody, not a saint, a pope or anybody has ever gone through life without performing, however small, some evil consciously. Every boy on the island is tempted and in some way they all commit some form of evil, whether it is the name calling of a weaker boy to the murder of another, they all do it. There are only two exceptions: Piggy, because he is not strong enough to perform evil and Simon, because he is pure good. But in reality no one exists like Simon, unless you believe in Jesus (and what the Bible teaches) and even if you do then you also believe he was more than human. Thirdly the line between good and evil is unclear. As Golding shows the decent into Savagery is slow, as the island changes boundaries of acceptance change. To start in a private school the children would not have bullied an other, as they did to Piggy, as the laws of there school would punish them. Once on the island there new freedom is a luxury and they do not hesitate to call others by names. However they all still cling to civilisation, for a while at least, as at the beginning none would attack another without justification. As the island changes the boundaries are pushed so far that murder is justifiable. As mentioned before once the boundaries are crossed there is no going back. Golding offers another explanation to the reason for evils victory, â€Å"the darkness of man’s heart† perhaps men are naturally evil. If one takes this mentality then in reality there is no struggle between good and evil; just resistance as evil dominates and men become moraleless creatures driven only by basic desire. Books like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter portray evil as a different species, as men who are corrupted and not as Golding describes men in there natural and basic form. Lord of the Flies is perhaps the only novel which describes the battle between good and evil as the inner battle which every man must face. Simon was a visionary and his realisation is what Golding was trying to say, the â€Å"beast† they all feared was within them. In other words they feared each other and themselves but could not realise this. Golding presents the struggle between good and evil as a battle doomed from the start. He portrays men as naturally evil and only the few who cling to civilisation as good, but they are ultimately doomed as the three who do stay true to humanity are destroyed save Ralph who is rescued by luck. Lord of the Flies shows how without the fragile walls of society what human nature is truly like and why evil in the end will always be able to dominate good.
